Dally Messenger III was the foundation National Secretary* of the Association of Civil Marriage Celebrants of Australia (at the request of Lionel Murphy). He was the Foundation President of the Funerals Celebrants Association of Australia (1977). *(1974 after Maureen Barron - Murphy’s Secretary)

In 1995 he was unanimously elected as Foundation National President and Administrator of the Australian Federation of Civil Celebrants Inc (in 2000 the largest and most successful celebrant organisation) a post he held to that year.

When the Attorney-General’s Department established competency standards in 1995 the Federation asked him to become Course Director and to establish the Australian and International College of Celebrancy a task which he has carried out most successfully. (www.celebrancy.com)

When the Attorney General’s Department re-did the Competency  Requirements he was appointed a member of the Industry Reference Group (IRG) to set those standards.

He taught Accountancy, English and Ancient History at Haileybury College for seven years (1969-1975).         

From 1979 to 1996 he was publisher/editor (10 years) and columnist of Dance Australia Magazine - the most successful independent performing arts magazine in Australia’s history.

In 1986 he was a consultant to the Victorian Government on the Arts City Planning Committee.

In 1987 he was consultant on the film The First Kangaroos  (Roadshow, Coote and Carroll)

He is the author of numerous published feature articles including Educational Broadsheets for The Australian, magazine articles, broadcasts (news commentaries and book reviews for Radio Australia et alia). He was the official representative of all the major Australian newspapers at the 5th international Ballet Competition, Moscow, June, 1985.

     Dally is the author of four Published Books. Ceremonies for Today / Ceremonies and Celebrations, Lothian (4th edition) accepted as the best book published on creating secular Celebrations and Rites.
       He authored So Mum and Dad Have Separated, (2nd Edition), Being a Chum was Fun, a history of Melbourne Radio in the 1930s and 40s,  and The Master (Angus & Robertson, 1978) the first published history of the beginnings of Rugby League in Australia.

He has been three times International guest speaker on celebrancy in New Zealand (Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland), and twice in the United Kingdom (Bristol and Manchester). In 2002 established Celebrancy in the USA where he gave a number of public lectures. He also gave a public lecture on celebrant Funerals in Hull UK which was widely reported. He has created a website for funeral celebrant eulogies – www.apersonalhistory.com and another for the college   www.celebrancy.com.

He has just completed (2007) (with Sean Fagan) a completely revised edition of “The Master” – the early history of Rugby League in Australia.

He has had extensive experience in amateur theatre, drama and musicals.

He is the grandson of Herbert Henry Dally Messenger, First Captain of Australian Rugby League (1907-1908), HH Dally Messenger was also a champion rugby union player, cricketer, long oarsman, yachtsman, and sculler.

HH Dally’s father was Charles Amos Messenger, champion sculler of Victoria ca. 1875.

My grandfather - Herbert Henry Dally Messenger -was the first Captain of Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Club. Easts won the first Rugby League Premiership and are th only club with and unbroken history back to 1908.
