OPD 07-08 Approved list of activities - Brief Summary - Dates and Places 2-hour activity topics: 1. Structure of the Marriage Ceremony: Working through Step by Step (07360) Compulsory Activity # 07008: Establishing that the proposed marriage will be valid (3 hours) OPD-Ongoing Professional Development – Australia-wide 2007-2008 The International College of Celebrancy has presented AG- approved professional development since official OPD started in 2003. Dally Messenger wrote the first training for civil celebrants in 1995. He has worked passionately for quality in all ceremonies, as well as high standards for celebrant training. Dally and his wife, Remi, have created curriculum around every aspect of ceremony. The work of the College has substance, meaning and depth, and all participants are treated with respect and professionalism. We work to ensure that the College OPD sessions are relaxed and enjoyable but also competently structured so you learn valuable skills and information, participate to the extent you are comfortable and gain motivation and renewal in your celebrant work. (There is always a mix of experienced and new celebrants.) The Compulsory Legal 3 hour activity can only be taught by a presenter approved specifically for the Compulsory by the Marriage Celebrants Section of the Attorney-General’s office in Canberra. Remi Messenger is authorised as one of those presenters. We have been in dialogue with many celebrants over the past years about what they want in professional development. This year we present the following schedule (see below) for your consideration. (Please note that all dates and topics are subject to change. In all cases, we will give reasonable notice on this website.) In Melbourne the venue for most training sessions is the Treacy Centre
The Treacy Centre - central, comfortable, free parking available 126 The Avenue, Parkville, near the corner of Royal Parade and Walker Streets. Located 3km from the City of Melbourne and 20km from the Tullamarine Airport and just minutes away from the Zoo, the State Netball and Hockey Centre and Melbourne University. Tram Train |

OPD in MELBOURNE, VICTORIA In Melbourne, we decided to separate the Compulsory Legal activity from the optional topics. Most celebrants now recognize they can look around and carefully choose a topic that they have not done before and one that is truly valuable and interesting to them. Our Thursday evening Compulsory allows you to travel out of peak hours and go for dinner with fellow celebrants in Carlton afterwards or home in time for dinner. We have a beautiful, comfortable venue at THE TREACY CONFERENCE CENTRE on THE AVENUE in PARKVILLE. Good available parking (free at the Zoo or 60 cent an hour meters) or easy access by public transportation.
________________ A Few Selected Testimonials I came away from tonight with renewed energy, a lightness of heart - and a few creative ideas. Oh... how that helps! The two hours were predictably enjoyable. Dally matched his usual high standard of teaching, ably assisted by Remi. The session brought out the best in everybody who read, or otherwise performed, indicating the serious manner in which our celebrants consider their appointments. The evening last month was a most enjoyable and informative time with you and your gracious staff. I really gained a lot of useful information. Since I have read over your notes and my project many times now, I don’t think I will forget anything that you taught me!. It was also a very enjoyable evening with the other celebrants. I have gained a new perspective about the value of including the readers rehearsals on these occasions. Dally Messenger’s video and spoken word presentation at the seminar proved rather eloquently that a far superior product can be delivered on the day with a full reading and some sincere and approachable advice on technique and delivery. Wow – fantastic! Was a bit apprehensive before going, but it was such a great opportunity for me to meet and talk with Celebrants. They were all friendly and willing to share their thoughts and ideas. I was one of those people in my own little ‘comfort zone’ who tended to say ‘I do a good job - my rehearsals are adequate - ~what am I doing here?’
